These are the inevitable consequences of freeing up the markets, free to set any which condition you like. We ran a retail garden centre up until 5years ago and prior to that Bunnings and the other big chains went to the wholesalers and pressured them into supplying only to them, the small independants warned the wholesalers that went that way that they would be screwed by the majors and that we would not support them as small business people, hence most of those wholesalers have now gone to the wall because they were screwed and could not make a living. Both Coles and Woolworths have proven themselves to be rapacious bullies in the food industry and I refuse to give them any of my money. Woolworths store adjacent to a strip shopping centre. While competition is the cornerstone of capitalism, for businesses it imposes a limit to their profitability, so businesses use methods to limit the effect of competition. Yes, it does sound as if the supermarkets are using monopolistic power to control suppliers. They open unprofitable stores in new areas so as to keep out smaller independent operators. We never thought there were any concerns. We had built up stocks in anticipation of large sales, and then a short period before the promotion was due to run we were advised that all of the promotions had been cancelled. Having to pay to do business with government owned business is just plain wrong. But this is not even being discussed.
